Why You Should Do a Sugar Detox
Many people nowadays rely on easy to prepare foods such as processed and canned foods. Since these products often contain added sugar, it makes up a large proportion of their daily calorie intake.
The human body of course has reactions to our sugar consumption. Some of the effects occur every time we eat while others become visible over years of flooding our body with too much sugar.
Sharing with you how eating sugar and excessive sugar intake affects our body.
Sugar stimulates the brain’s production of dopamine, a chemical that is part of the reward system in the brain. This dopamine release then, in turn, makes us want to eat again and again.
Sugar also has immediate effects on your mouth itself. The bacteria that is naturally in your mouth eat sugar, producing acids that attack the enamel on your tooth eventually leading to cavities and tooth decay.
High sugar intakes accelerate the effects of skin aging and worsens pre-existing conditions like acne and rosacea.
Consuming too much added sugar increases heart disease risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and inflammation.
Over consumption of sugar damages your liver in a manner similar to drinking too much alcohol. This can lead to serious health problems like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease over time.
Sugar over consumption also has a negative impact on gut health. Poor gut health contributes to indigestion.
Having consistently high blood sugar levels can cause damage to the delicate blood vessels in your kidneys which can lead to an increased risk of kidney damage.
When there is an excessive sugar intake, the pancreas has to work harder to keep up and produce more insulin. If it overworked, the organ can shut down and stop producing insulin altogether.
Sugar over consumption is known to negatively impact both male and female reproductive functions in various ways. In men, high blood sugar impairs sperm production; in women, it can interfere with ovulation.
I suggest to everyone to consider doing a sugar detox once in a while. I am sure the results will surprise you.
