5 Healthy Thanksgiving Eats
For all my American clients out there, Thanksgiving can be a tricky time to stay the fitness course. With family downtime, delicious (and often decadent eats), and the general cultural atmosphere of consuming, it can be easy to derail everything you’ve worked so hard to gain.
While balance is a key part of life and I would never tell someone not to have that piece of pie or extra gravy over mashed potatoes, there are so many wonderfully delicious ways to make Thanksgiving more healthful. I’ve rounded up several of my favorite quick healthy holiday recipes below. Let me know which ones you try, and reach out to me on IG @lazybitch.la if with your favorite recipes, too!
Who says stuffing has to be packed full of bread from refined white flour with little nutritional value? Kitchen Treaty created a tantalizing stuffing from fiber and protein-rich quinoa, paired with wild rice for a vibrant stuffing alternative. She calls for classic celery and apples in the stuffing, and I encourage you to go wild and throw in more veggies. Spinach? Yes please! Carrots? Why not?! Let yourself get wild.
For a fresh and light dish that will be welcome amongst heavier items at any Thanksgiving spread, think fruit salad. Winter is citrus season, and the brightness of oranges pairs so beautifully with slightly anise-leaning fennel and the clean taste of mint. It’s also a totally beautiful way to get your vitamin C in, too!
Instead of relying on turkey fat and butter for flavor, this gravy recipe from Oh My Veggies turns to hearty mushrooms and rich vegetable broth. The result is a bold and earthy gravy, that feels so luxe and hearty atop mashed potatoes.
Step. Away. From. The. Can. Unless you’re one of those people that just loves the flavor of canned cranberry sauce (seriously, are you out there?) there is no reason you shouldn’t be making this for yourself! I love this recipe from Food & Wine that leaves the cranberries largely whole, and adds sweet orange rind for a flavor boost.
That’s right, I’m including cupcakes on this list! But not just any cupcakes. This recipe from My Whole Food Life features zero refined sugars, and is 100 percent vegan. And the best part? None of your guests will ever notice this is healthy.
