Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate
BABES! We made it to Friday! #Praise. To kick off the weekend, I’ve whipped up an extra special treat: a post all about the health benefits of dark chocolate. You don’t need cheat days when you let yourself have sweet, nourishing eats in moderation and dark chocolate definitely deserves a spot in your diet. Read on for all the reasons you should consider munching on a little 70%+ dark chocolate today.
Yes, you read that right. Dark chocolate can literally help you chill out! According to a study via Bustle presented at the 2018 Experimental Biology convention, “the concentration of cacao [in dark chocolate], the more positive the impact on cognition, memory, mood, immunity, and other beneficial effects.”
I bet all my vegans and vegetarians out there didn’t see this one coming! Drew Ramsey, MD, told Well+Good that dark chocolate is a “surprisingly good” source of iron. And while this shouldn’t be a total swap for iron supplements you might be taking, it’s definitely a delicious iron booster.
Quells Free Radicals
Similar to fruits and veggies, the antioxidants and flavonoids in dark chocolate are known to fight free radicals, which are linked to aging and certain diseases including cancer and heart disease. Now I’m not calling chocolate a vegetable, but maybe I’m not not calling it one either? ;)
So, who else is planning to add a little extra dark chocolate to their meal plan today? Consider throwing a few dark chocolate chips in your granola, adding a spoonful of raw cacao to your smoothie, or just straight up indulging in a piece!
